Do we have anyway to use the "smart card slot" found on some Dells? Is that an OS level option? What phase? Can it do user login?

I see some smart cards do PKI stuff and have a Linux middle-ware.

This one says Fido certified. Does that mean anything?

I like smart card idea. Are they still a valid security device? Do we have software that works with them?
 
I think if this slot (when installing the corresponding packages - libccid, pcsc-lite) is recognized by the system as a pcsc reader, then it should work. This can be checked using pcsc-tools. As of middleware to access the smart card opensc may be used.
