Not that unusual. Setting kern.securelevel to > -1 (0, 1,2,3) has positive impacts on security, but can make system use and adminstration difficult.
Security vs ease of use is always a tradeoff, regardless of the context. Locking your doors makes it more secure but the tradeoff is you are slowed down enter and exit.
