Well following from an old thread I posted Thread shocking-x-performance-on-s3-prosavage-ddr.37245 I have since managed to get driver acceleration working. I am only posting this in case someone else may have a similar issue.
This was solved by selecting the video RAM to 8MB and AGP aperture size to 8MB in the BIOS. It was not a dedicated video card but motherboard integrated.
From the X.Org logs it was noted that the 3D acceleration is turned off due to the low video RAM. Also it appears that X.Org ignores the BIOS AGP aperture size and selects 16MB of its own accord.
I hope that helps anyone who may come across this obtuse piece of hardware.
