Solved Running freebsd from external hard disk

I've just installed FreeBSD on a 2.5" IDE disk on a laptop without any problems. I was hoping to use this as a general purpose disk by putting it in an external caddy and booting from that. I found that FreeBSD began to boot okay, but then got stuck looking for its mount point. I guess that isn't surprising since it was using ada0 when initially installed, but was now using da0.

Is there anything I can do to get around such a problem?

Use GPT labels for the partitions and enter those in /etc/fstab.
