Knowing that I have one NIC and no access to bhyve passthru, how would someone go about configuring a router/desktop?

This is for educational purpose so let's assume I cannot put a box inbetween.

What's that supposed to be? A router is a host (or device) that routes network traffic. What does this have to do with a desktop?
I am using the same computer for both.

That's a *really* bad idea...

Even running just a "router on a stick" with that single NIC would require a VLAN-capable switch, which I suppose you don't have...

If you want to build a router, just get one of those N5105-based appliances that can be found from ~150$ on aliexpress. They work fine and are capable of very decent throughput for a 'soho'-router.

Yeah, I'm wondering what this host is supposed to route if there's only one interface. That said, any host can be configured to route traffic. As long as you have the interfaces for it and the networks attached to it.

I wonder why "bhyve" is mentioned?

If the answer to "what should it route" would be "a virtual network for all my bhyve VMs to/from the outside world", then this question might make more sense :-/

Thank you for your answers. I don't understand a lot about network. Well a bit more than this morning.

I'll get there eventually. I haven't tried yet.

I tried a few years back to learn TCP/IP and "Holly Molly", it is like gibberish to me.
I'll give it an other go, maybe I'll understand something this time.

It's a fairly high level overview, not too much detail. While details are certainly important they're not that important to understand the general principles. Once you understand the general principles you can fill in the details as you go.
