Yeah in the comments you can see the wrongly-steered anti OSS discussion.

They're mentioning dmix which is a userland component utilizing ALSA's virtual interfaces because either OSS or ALSA vanilla can't allow multiple applications on a single device.

FreeBSD's pcm system allows multiplexing, resampling and virtual devices all behind the OSS interface.
