I regularly listen to BBC radio 4 and world service streams with mplayer. They have closed some older streams in Oct 2023, however it is still possible to stream BBC radio channels as per the information at this link:-

I found the MPEG DASH streams work with mplayer on freebsd 13.1, so for example to listen to BBC world service channel routed via akami, the command is :-

$ mplayer http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/ms6/live/...h/nonuk/pc_hd_abr_v2/ak/bbc_world_service.mpd

This channel has some high quality programming, for example this evening they have an interview with the physicist Carlo Rovelli.
