Other Qtile black screen on startup

I installed a fresh install of FreeBSD 12.1 .

I used pkg to install xorg and qtile, added “exec qtile” to my .xinitrc. When I startx i get a black screen with qtile logs showing it crashes because of XCB_connection errors.
I tried uninstalling and installing from ports same issue. I am running in vmware workstation so no 3d acceleration.

I am kind of at a loss. Any suggestions?

One small step: Use a xterm as a "window manager", and from there start qtile (so you've got eventually more output from it).

Thanks, I was able to see that the default config I pulled from the website for Qtile was not compatible with the version installed on my system. I pulled the correct version from site-packages and it seems to be working now!!
