Problem updating 15.1-RELEASE

I'm having an issue with FreeBSD 15.1 Release process that seems to involve zfs.

Code: 
freebsd-update fetch
freebsd-update install
shutdown -r now

So far I've done the above and now when I attempt reboot I get an error mounting a Removable Direct Access SPC-4 SCSI device. I then see: Mounting from zfs:zrootx/ROOT/default failed with error 45. I'm then shown loader variables: vfs.root.mountfrom=zfs:zrootx/ROOT/default and a mountroot> shell.

What is going on, and how can this be fixed?

Also should this be a separate thread or is the reply here appropriate.
 
I suspect you upgraded your pool (zpool-upgrade(8)) but forgot to update the bootcode. You probably did this some time before running the update, but never rebooted in the meantime, so didn't run into the boot issue yet.

One needs to be careful here; there are some minor differences between the 2 commands that may or may not be important.
Think about the differences between:
notifying all running processes to shutdown and reboot
against
kill -9 all running processes and hitting init 0

User perspective is no difference because the system reboots, but to running programs? Maybe huge difference.

And if SirDice is correct, how one reboots does not matter
 
Boot the install media of 15.1-RELEASE, you should be able to update the bootcode from there. Do you know how the system booted? UEFI or CSM/BIOS? If you're unsure, and have both efi and freebsd-boot partitions make sure to update both!

but if we want to be correct the right utility to use in an immediate reboot is
reboot
because
shutdown
is not really meant for it

The reboot and halt commands just blindly sends a SIGTERM to all processes. The shutdown(8) command (and its aliases) runs /etc/rc.shutdown and sends all the rc(8) scripts a "stop", so services are stopped in reverse order they have been started. Sometimes rc(8) scripts and/or daemons have some additional shutdown/cleanup procedures besides just killing the process. Or need to be stopped in order (one service might depend on another).

I used to use "reboot" but use "shutdown -r now" since reading that from SirDice. So now more confused.
