I have looked and looked but I can't find anything that explains the difference between "popa3d" and "popa3d before sendmail". What does it mean "before sendmail"? Is there any compatibility issues if you are actually using postfix as the MTA?
I downloaded the source patch, and it appears that the "before sendmail" version was hacked to provide authentication. I believe that more recent MTAs support SASL for essentially the same purpose, though perhaps with a different method. I hope someone else also finds this useful to know.
