vbox Poor performance with Virtualbox: Win10 (Host) : FreeBSD 13 (Guest)

Hi guys,

it is almost a month that I am trying to get decent performance on FreeBSD 13 (as guest) and VirtualBox upon Win10 (as host). Even though I learned a lot of stuff and improved my knowledge of FreeBSD I didn't get the point where I can use this virtual machine as I did daily with Linux (Debian).

What I have got so far is a general instability that from time to time prevents to properly boot or crash completely the vm; some Xfce4 plugins panel don't work properly (e.g.: xfce4-docklike-plugin); and the responsiveness it is not the same I can get from Linux. I understand that VirtualBox receives more attention toward the Linux realm, but maybe other vitualization software are better than VirtualBox to run FreeBSD although I would prefer using a open-source solution.

So far I thought I might try to run Virt-manager through WSL2 (I need to get this one though) or I could try to use MS Hyperv but as any other MS products is convoluted and full of useless options just to make things utterly complicated and then paying for customer service assistance...

Anyway any suggestion is really appreciated!

Thanks,
TGL

Does your VirtualBox install have enough room? I'd recommend trying the latest version available, plus at least 20 GB of disk space and at least 4 GB of RAM that can be allocated to a VirtualBox instance. beyond that, it would be helpful to provide screenshots and some evidence that you read the FreeBSD Handbook. You might find this section helpful. Pay attention to which commands need to be run on the FreeBSD guest, as opposed to doing something on the host.

Hi astyle thanks for helping me out!

I think I gave to my VM enough power: 4 vCPU, 4 GB of Ram and 32GB of disk, which the same specs I use for the Linux VM.

Anyway I followed all the official documentation available; fixed a bug that involves Firefox, the mouse wheel and virtualbox; I also opened a bug report about the issue with the panel: https://gitlab.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-docklike-plugin/-/issues/12

I left the paravirtualization as default since there is anything specified for FreeBSD not even in the Oracle documentation, I also attached a bunch of screenshots.

Cheers!

One of your screenshots says that "Invalid settings detected" (by VirtualBox)... You might want to investigate and fix that. :)

This is because VirtualBox tries to force the use of VMSVGA as graphic adapter. I have the same warning as I use the Vbox adapter (which is better from my point of view).

Anyway, I have FreeBSD 13.0 as guest in VirtualBox under Windows 10 and it works well. No poor performance (for a VM, I mean) and no crash. I don't use xfce that being said, but Lxde.

I think this isn't as FreeBSD related as you seem to think.

I didn't think about a FreeBSD issue but about a virtualbox issue, as matter of fact I asked about other virtualization solutions; but if you have some tips to improve the performance with virtualbox please do not esitate to share these with me, thanks!

I can't assist too much with the performance issue. My FreeBSD 13 VM gets 2GB memory and one CPU, but mostly runs in server mode.
If I need a window manager, I have x11-wm/fvwm2 configured. It's very light weight, and runs well -- but I'd be inclined to give it another CPU for extended use.
I also have a Debian 10 VM with full Gnome desktop. It gets more CPUs and memory (3GB, two CPUs), and can be a bit sluggish starting a browser, but still quite usable.

For the FreeBSD VM, In the "System" Settings tab, I have selected (only):
  • Enable I/O APIC
  • Enable Nested Paging
I have never used anything other than the "Default" Paravirtualization interface.

The storage is a vdi file on an IDE controller.

I'm not confident you can't improve on these settings -- and I'm hoping others will comment...

I see you have the "--disable-timesync" option set in /etc/rc.conf. I think there's a common origin for this, as I once used it too.
It stops the VM resetting its clock after hybernation, thus ensuring the wrong time when your VM wakes up.
I expect your life will be improved by removing it -- it certainly did for me.

I can confirm that I had to use VBoxSVGA to get resolutions above 800x600, and the "Invalid selection detected" flag is always set precisely because of that.
However this post by GVitaliy suggests that installing the x11-drivers/xf86-video-vmware driver may fix the issue. I have not yet tried it.

I didn't think about a FreeBSD issue but about a virtualbox issue
That's kind of still my point. Your running this Windows version of virtualbox on Windows which makes me think it's a question for a Windows forum and not here. But I haven't run virtualbox in so long I don't know.

Looking at your settings, I see you use 3D acceleration. Have you tried to disable it?

Also, it seems that you use a device as internet source? I guess you passthru this very device in the FreeBSD VM. Can't you use the Windows host for that (bridged networking)? I would try without that too. You can encounter a bug in a FreeBSD driver or with VirtualBox itself.

And I ain't sure if powerd is usable in a VM.

You speak of crashes, but can you investigate more? Circunstances, core dump, logs...

What makes you say that the performances are poor exactly?

I have running a GNOME3 installation in FreeBSD 13 in a VirtualBox on a macOS host. Here it becomes a little bit sluggish if I disable the Use Host I/O Cache setting as shown in the screenshot. Note, on macOS VirtualBox does not offer IDE but only AHCI and SATA.

Anyway, at least on macOS we must not use the Host I/O Cache for dynamically sized VDI’s. Here this reproducibly destroys the UFS and crashes the system. So for perfomance reasons, I switched to fixed size VDIs with Use Host I/O Cache enabled.

Installing this package xf86-video-vmware has been a clever move, on the Linux realm is well known that the vmware driver is better than the older VboxSVGA one.

Code:
# Debian
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.

# FreeBSD
glxinfo | grep vendor
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa/X.org

The issues with the panel plugins however continue, I wonder if there are difference between the package and the ports although they look to be the same version. 🤔

Emrion

Actually powerd fails, about poor performance I refer to crash at boot and crash or freeze during the X session; but also my personal feeling however with the new driver the X session looks a little bit more responsive.

I don't know where finding boot logs yet but in /var/log/messages I found this:
Code:

Anyway when It fails, it happens when is trying to load "vboxguest".

I would like to add more information if leaded in the right direction, thanks!

I've run into performance issues when using VirtualBox on Windows 10 before. This was not specific to FreeBSD tho.
The issue turned out to be VirtualBox running in "slow mode" / "turtle mode" (as previously mentioned by T-Daemon). This is indicated by by the green turtle in the bottom right hand corner of the VirtualBox guest window:

virtualbox_turtle_mode.png

Check whether that icon is present.

In turtle mode, VirtualBox does not use the underlying hardware support for virtualization (eg. VT-x). The cause of this is that Windows itself already uses / blocks these resources. This happens when any of the virtualization features are enabled in the Windows 10 host. Namely this would be stuff like Hyper-V itself, Sandbox and every other Windows feature which uses Hyper-V. You can read more about that on the web - there's plenty of info on that out there.
After disabling these Windows feature VirtualBox provided decent performance.

I am not in Green Turtle Mode... 😅

However the new driver solves some problems but creates newer ones... Now the X session got unresponsive more frequently it looks like the screensaver is not working properly as with the VboxSVGA driver hence maybe it tries to start but fails and makes the the desktop insensitive..

Maybe I should install XDM and see if this is able to generate the xsession-erros log... 🤔

I don't think that installing XDM will help... I'm pretty sure that the errors are logged elsewhere... but I would encourage you to read the Handbook for troubleshooting your X.org installation.

I installed Lightdm and the issue with the panel are finally displayed in the log perhaps I also found what is freezing the windows.

Code:
(xfwm4:61016): xfwm4-WARNING **: 13:05:54.721: Unsupported GL renderer (llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.1, 256 bits)).

I'd like to see if with "VboxSVGA" driver I get the same warning... 🤔

Can you describe the host environment? What's used to store the virtual disk; graphics hardware; how much memory and video memory; and so on.

I sometimes forget to look at the VirtualBox log. Is there anything relevant, at the time of a problem occurring?

… about poor performance I refer to crash at boot and crash or freeze during the X session …

By crash, do you mean a kernel panic (system crash)?

… in /var/log/messages I found this: …

What's above appears to be an ee view of /etc/rc.conf.

Can you find, again, and share the message?

Thanks.

Sometime it fails to boot when is time to run the Guest additions, a couple of time crashed with Firefox and sometimes the X session froze. The issues with the XFCE maybe are just bugs that belongs to DE itself, I opened a bug request but I haven't received any reply yet.

Cheers!
