Opinions on LAN Extender/ Powerline Adapter

Does anyone have any opnions on extending a LAN over a power circuit using something like

I hate them. They are pretty much always the worst option. However, I do have a scenario where they were the best of the worst options: My parent's house. Due to several constrains there wasn't any other option left so I installed some Devolo dLAN pro 1200+. They have been working flawlessly for about 8 years now.

My advice: Get something semi decent. Personally, I don't "trust" TP-Link (from an engineering point of view). I can't say that the Devolo ones are the best ones but they seemed reasonable (within the spectrum of power line just sucking hard).

I guess it's the usual aspect of: It's a bad option but if you don't have any other option available it suddenly becomes a "good" one :D

Yeah, they're slow, but they're the best option when Wifi range becomes a problem. I've used them twice now, once at my wife's office, and once for my eldest's apartment. They work OK. Better than overextended Wifi, anyway.

i have 2 tplinks and 2 dlinks.
they work at about 70 mb/s (bits). once every several months you have to pull one out and insert back.
they are about the same as 2.4GHz wifi as performance and quite a bit worse than 5GHz a[cx]

after i retired one of them the connection is much stable. haven't had to plug one out in like 8 months

Any difference between the tplink and dlink? Which would you recommend, or is it down to price?

I also use a pair of TP links for a single room where I haven't found the time to route some proper cabling to. Just as others have said - they are the worst option and should only be used if absolutely nothing else is available...
They are slow (like sub-100MBit slow), even if they claim 1GBps speeds, and they loose connection every now and then, so I also have to unplug one of them every ~4 months or after a power outage.

From what I've heard from friends and colleagues who were also forced to use such toys, this seems to be the state of the art for those things. The dirt-cheap no-name ones are a bit worse, the 'known' brands like tp-link or fritz are a bit less worse. You have to decide what price tag you are willing to fulfill, but there really is nothing "good" on the market for this horrible piece of technology...

In other words: If you can use a WDS-bridge in your scenario, ALWAYS go for the WDS-bridge.

mine are about the same. the dlinks dont speek 1000tx only 100tx. anyway from what i found on the net the best ones reach about 200mbs.
there is also the possibility of ethernet over coax if you have catv which seem to be a lot better than the powerline adapters but also 3x-4x the price

I worked as technical support for some of these a few years ago, ARRIS brand. I don't think they are selling them as a current product any more. Very simple in setting up, and they did work. That is as much as I will say for the technology, because the effectiveness/speed was largely dependent on the electrical system in the house (many homes in the US are wired very poorly or are very old configurations - a number of homes still are using electrical wiring installed in the early 1900's).
