Not able to start Xorg on Apple iBook G4 using FreeBSD 13.1

Hi guys,

I installed FreeBSD on an iBook G4 but when I start Xorg it goes back to the console. I don't know what's the problem with this. I have tried VESA drivers but gives me other errors like screen is not configured. Only scfb drivers gives me a more detailed prompt. Any one here could help me revive this machine?

Here is /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Thanks in advance

Welcome.

According to Wikipedia, iBook G4s are equipped with an ATI Radeon GPU (9200 or 9550).

You need to load the corresponding driver (in this case: radeonkms), make sure to read the relevant section of the handbook:

P.S. You can use "code" tags rather than "icode" to avoid such very long posts.

FreeBSD powerpc architecture does not support drm-kmod... I tried to compile via ports but not successful and pkg binary doesn't have the package drm-kmod. Is there anything I can do in order to start Xorg? Btw mate-session says screen "cannot open display"

Thanks again

There is no package repository for PowerPC, nothing for 12.x or 13.x.

Keep in mind that PowerPC is a Tier 2 architecture.

The log looks OK, I don't see any errors in there (except for synaptics, but that should not be fatal). How exactly do you start Xorg?

I start it via slim but after I type the user and password it makes a reset, go back to the console and slim starts again. Via startx it refuses and go to console saying no screen found

Code:
[    21.118] (==) Using config directory: "/usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"

Thanks, I put the xorg.conf in /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ what am I doing wrong? Same problems..

Wrong place, that should have been /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf. But you shouldn't create a xorg.conf at all any more. You only put some partial configuration snippets in /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ if the auto-detection doesn't work (or picks the wrong settings/drivers).

There is no package repository for PowerPC, nothing for 12.x or 13.x.
Thank you for the reminder, I didn't notice that.

sedzcat If having to build all third-party software from source sounds problematic to you, you'll probably have an easier time on this machine with NetBSD or OpenBSD, which do have binary packages available for macppc.
