News: Plasma Login Manager Drops FreeBSD

Claims it shouldn't be a "big deal" since SDDM still works fine.

I'm not familiar enough with systemd/logind, but presumably the KDE devs see enough reason to build their own login manager. I'd suspect it's at least partially due to wanting to distance the project from legacy solutions (Xorg). So, it's not clear to me that retaining support for SDDM wouldn't just delay the inevitable.

You don't need a DM for any DE or WM that I'm aware of for FreeBSD. The point of a DM is primarily for when you're starting your DE/WM from init. A quick google indicates that that doesn't appear to have changed.

The main benefits that I know of with DMs is that they can be started more easily from init, and they come with some features like the ability to lock your screen. Personally, I don't use them.
