Hey guys,
Just straight to the point.
I checked the laptop compatibility wiki at https://wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops and couldn't find the exact model. I also googled around; some people in this forum discussed the same laptop as mine, but they didn't report back on how well it is running.
I noticed the best compatibility with FreeBSD is the t480, which is being sold a lot here. I'm considering buying one just for the sake of learning FreeBSD, but I recently got myself a Lenovo Legion and left my Ideapad unused. If anyone has the exact Ideapad as mine, could you help me with pointers? Is all the hardware compatible? Any issues?
A little background: I've been a Linux hobbyist for quite a while, distro hopping and currently settled with Debian and Ubuntu. I figure most of the differences from Linux are under the hood. Once you get into the GUI, it's Gnome or XFCE, which is all very familiar to Linux users like myself.
So, next question: although I won't mind tinkering around with FreeBSD, sell me on why I should use FreeBSD over Linux, let alone use it as a daily driver? How are the ported softwares doing on FreeBSD (I'll need Blender, GIMP, Inkscape, and probably Stable Diffusion), some games like OpenMW (is there any FreeBSD port for this?) and MAME or older arcade and console emulators?
Last question: I was thinking of installing FreeBSD on an external SSD. That's what I did with my Ubuntu install. So when I move things to my Legion, I can just boot up to Ubuntu with all familiar settings and installed software. Perhaps even when I go to the office or any public internet space, I can bring that around so I can work in my environment and leave no trace on the public computer. I attempted this as I remember the installer ISO failed to boot (I use ventoy). I might try an older version until I find the working version. But, in general, will this kind of setup work for FreeBSD?
Thank you in advance.
