Anything by Arthur C. Clarke. e.g. the Rama series. Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon, The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. As a kid I loved Jules Verne and H.G.Wells stories. So many other books.... Look up the authors whose books have won Hugo or Nebula awards. Though I must admit I got bored with Sci-Fi about 25 years ago.
