Metacity not loading by dault in gnome 2.30?

After a fresh install of FreeBSD and gnome 2.30 I noticed that the themes in the theme manager would not apply when selected. Also compositing would not work when enabling in the configuration editor like on previous version of gnome. Now I've found out the following:

When doing a [cmd=]metacity --replace &[/cmd] in a terminal, suddenly the selected theme and compositing do apply, so does that mean that the recent version of gnome does not run metacity automaticcally from the start? What does it run then?
What can I do to run metacity from the start?

Just one more question to this: How come that metacity is wrongly compiled in the first place, when using a package? In the past I had other problems with other packages of the gnome environment that could be solved by reinstalling them from ports. How can that be?
