As per the title, it was mentioned in PR 287955 that the old GDM 42 package works fine with GNOME 47 currently shipped in the ports. Can anyone provide a binary copy of it somewhere to try?
Besides that, other than building from port (with the right git checkout of course), or someone has it in pkg cache, or personal custom build package repository, you might find it in https://download.freebsd.org/releases/ISO-IMAGES/14.3/ FreeBSD-14.3-RELEASE-amd64-dvd1.iso.xz.
That dvd1.iso image contains binary packages for selected packages, one of them is x11/gnome, which should include gdm as a dependency.
At the time when 14.3 was released on 2025-Jun-06, gdm should be on version 42.0_7 (see 2025Q2).
The compressed disk1.iso image is ~ 3.2G large, though.
First feedback: I can confirm that the GhostBSD package works... sort of. It starts, logins and so on but the shell is not correctly rendered. Now I'm downloading the ISO.
Edit: same behaviour. The GNOME shell is rendered in white even when in dark mode -> rollback.
