OpenBOX lack of thumbnais or images in file manager/picker

I have a persistent issue with all window managers aside from a full KDE environment.
My file pickers do not have thumbnails, at least not scalable ones. SOme files have an icon, at most. Not even all of them
This is probably my biggest gripe with the foss desktop at the moment, would like to resolve it somehow..
I have tried a few file managers, pcmanfm, thunar and caja. As stand alone FMs they do not seem to have thumbnails, I also installed all these packages ...

tumbler, poppler, ffmpegthumbnailer, libgsf and raw-thumbnailer.

What must I do to have scaleable thumbnails in my file manager like KDE5 has?
 
It looks like on a new,fresh user, caja at least has image thumbnails, perhaps KDE has trashed my current profile.

Still cannot get firefox or chrome to have them in its file picker, though. Creating ui.allow_platform_file_picker and setting it to true in my about:config didn;t seem to help
 
I think it's a permission problem accessing the cached thumbnail files. There was a similar thread somewhere..
