KDM keeps reloading

When I log in through KDM it keeps reloading with no errors or any messages and never goes to the desktop. When I use startx it fully loads into KDE4 desktop fine. I erased .kde4 to make sure it was not a settings conflict issue but to no avail.

Disable KDM.

Login at the console.

Run kdm manually. See if there are any error messages shown. Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log as well.

If it gets into a loop, hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to see if it outputs anything to the console while it's doing so.

Hopefully, that will show something.

I turned off KDM in ttys, how do I run KDM manually?

By typing kdm at a console.

This must be /usr/local/kde4/bin/kdm i think.

Yes, kdm is not in the default path, so type the full path in the command.

Ah, you're right. All my shells have /usr/local/kde4/bin added to the path, although I tend to use KRunner more often than the CLI.

I did /usr/local/kde4/bin/kdm.

In /var/log/Xorg.0.log there is nothing for (EE) errors relating to KDE or KDM. Is there something I should be looking for?

Do not run KDM via /etc/ttys: use /etc/rc.conf.
