ZFS Is it necessary to set up ZFS datasets for rootfs?

I have Linux compatibility layers located in /compat/linux and /compat/debian, as well as multiple FreeBSD base systems under /freebsd like /freebsd/15i386 and /freebsd/14i386. Do I need to set up ZFS datasets for these directories? If so, how should I configure the mountpoints and parameters for the datasets?

You don't have to use ZFS. UFS will also do.
ZFS has its benefits, no question, but it needs a bit learning. It ain't no rocket science, but using UFS is for sure more trivial.
What you use is up to you, but you don't have to use this or that.
But what I would reconsider twice, was to mix both on one system. That's working, and there may be reasons to do so, but it may cause trouble, and if it's just confusion, only, when you always need to think of which of your filesystems is what.

I'm a bit confused here. What is the purpose of those directories? Dual boot? Jail roots? VMs? In any case, did you know you could leverage boot environments to boot different versions of FreeBSD?

/freebsd/15i386
This seems to be rather futile though, the i386 platform has been deprecated with 15. So there is no i386 FreeBSD base system any more.

For jail rootfs or just chroot sometimes.
The https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:15:i386 exists and base_release_0 is still being updated, so you can use pkg to build a base rootfs. But the freebsd-ports should be 14.3
