Is AT&T U-Verse VDSL2?

Is AT&T U-Verse VDSL2 or is it an incompatible variant of VSDL2? I read that VDSL2 modems are often backward compatible with VDSL1 & ADSL. What can I do with an old ADSL modem, which the only functions it has are for is as a modem?

VDSL & ADSL (1&2) are typical consumer types of DSL. Also, if your Internet speeds are higher, it's likely that you have VDSL2.

VDSL2 will soon be replaced by Fiber in many places. This is what the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) input from the ITU-T standard on Modems is for. There's also a different standard called Optical Network Unit (ONU) by a different organization.

Then, a modem card for either DSL, Optical or for Fixed Wireless can be used with PPP on FreeBSD?

they work with pppoe when they are in bridge mode
not all operators allow bridge mode / some let you change whenever you want / some you have to ask and they do it for you
its interesting to get console / ssh access on them and look around. lots of shit, weird telco stuff

the operator provided firmware is usually full of holes and backdoors
this document is a bit old but you get the idea

I would think PPP would work if you have an PCI slot for it... Some were ISA.
You are talking 30 year old tech. I had (probably still have) an internal DSL modem compatible with BellAtlantic.
Speedstream might be the name. Intel also made one. Intel PRO DSL2100

A newer one:

i was speaking about external boxes, not cards
cards are probably cheaper but have shitty complex drivers which most likely won't be available for freebsd
telcos / isp likely never will ship cards because of support complexity
