How well are fancy things like transparency and wobbly windows supposed to work? The KDE4 compositor (whatever it is called) says in the Desktop Effects Settings GUI that my hardware doesn't support translucency and nothing else seems to be working either. Starting compton enables a bunch of nice things like transparent Konsole and menus, and, fading, and shadows around windows. However compton dies when I mess with certain panels (not all graphics-related) in System Settings.

I also tested in WindowMaker and compton mostly works and only dies once in a while for no reason I can figure out.
 
I just decided to remove all of kde4 and try out kde5 packages. Now that there are binaries, it's no big hassle/wait to just try things out. Compositing works a whole lot better than in kde4. About as good as it does in WindowMaker (with compton).
