Intalled gnome 2 cannot get login screen

Hi, I Upgraded FreeBSD 8.1 to 8.4. During this upgrade I ended up upgrading Gnome to Gnome2.
Everything went well until I restarted my server. I then notice when I load into the OS and the part where Gnome loads up and then shows a login screen. I don't get to see the login screen at all anymore. It just loads up a screen with the background leaf and no login screen. It then just stalls right there. I know the system is working and running by looking at my servers like apache which is still running while in this mode.

Yes, I checked /etc/rc.conf and it has both Gnome="YES" and gdm="YES" I don't know if the install complete in full or some parts failed.

What can I do to figure out the issue? what commands should I try?

I switched the mode to use terminal. So, in the terminal I notice error messages. It talks about GDM-Simple-Greeter this had regular expression errors.

How would I fix that?

How can I switch from Gnome2 to the light version?
