Solved intall 13.0 release , RC or BETA?

hi, I install 13.0-BETA3 from img , I should install an RC version,
or when 13.0-STABLE
comes out there will no diference
upgrading via freebsd-update?

Good question, the only thing i know that upgrading from RC2 to RELEASE should work without problems (SirDice told me).
Don't know about BETA3.

I wait two more weeks and do a clean install of 13.0-RELEASE.

I've updated (with freebsd-update) from 12.2 to one of the BETAs and then updated from that to RC1 and RC2 - no issues with freebsd-update.

Just on test machines and no desktop components so not a through test - but no issues with core updates & ports.

You might want to keep up with the RCs to make sure no bugs affect you after RELEASE? If anything slips in between your BETA3 and RELEASE that might not be pleasant for you.

I have several systems that have been upgraded steadily from BETA2 to BETA4 to RC1 and now running RC2. It's really not that big of a deal to upgrade. Keep in mind that those older BETA and RC versions aren't supported anymore as soon as a newer version comes out. So you'll need to keep up.

You can keep track of the changes here: https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/log/?h=releng/13.0
As you can see there have already been 4 commits since RC2 was released to fix outstanding issues. The whole point of the BETA and RC releases is to find these bugs before the release is finalized.

All -BETA and -RC releases are created from a releng branch (in this case releng/13.0) and can be used with freebsd-update. -STABLE comes from a different branch (stable/13) and has to be built from source for updating. This branch is then used to prepare the next minor release.

Also note that 13.0-STABLE is already out. Release versions are branched off from the stable branches. So there has to be a -STABLE branch before you can even branch off a -RELEASE.

This also confused me at first. On a scale from experimental to production-ready, -STABLE is actually just (roughly speaking) level 2 of 5:

1) -CURRENT (most experimental)
2) -STABLE
3) -BETA
4) -RC
5) -RELEASE (most production-ready)

In the FreeBSD context, think of "STABLE" as in the English word "stable" meaning "a building full of horses": It's wild ;)

According to experience, there’s a flood of commits to the stable branch shortly after a release has been published. Therefore, I have the habit to wait until 2 or 3 weeks after the release, and then update to the stable branch (stable/13 in this case). You can’t do this via freebsd-update, though, you have to do a source-level update, so this is certainly not the best option for everybody. If you track a stable branch, it’s also advisable to watch the commits, in case there’s a problem that affects you, requiring another update.

Aye. I generally switch quite quickly to the next stable branch if/when it's created. But yeah, especially the first couple of weeks there are usually still some issues to work out. But I've been running one or two -STABLE machines since 3.0 so I know what I'm getting into.

Just building the userland of RC2 on my other (desktop) machine. Let's see, how it goes. I have OpenZFS on that machine. Hope that I can switch back to the base ZFS after 13.0 install...

I always wait till the newest RELEASE version and rebuild the whole thing from scratch.

If you're trying out 13.0 (BETA, RC or the -RELEASE) don't upgrade your pools if you use ZFS. Wait until you're absolutely sure you don't need to revert back to 12.2 (or 11.x).

Good advice! This holds also to OpenZFS. It works with OpenZFS, but upgrading the pool makes it unbootable on 12.2.
