Information in Gnome Panel

Is there a ticker like thing to add to Gnome panel where I can display a single line information about things I wish.

e.g. if I want to see status of portupgrade -a, then i could do "ps aux|grep portupgrade" and it show me "ruby18: portupgrade: [150/251] en-freebsd-doc-20110110 (ruby18)" right on the panel.

Another example is if I want to see last syslog message using command
"tail -1 /var/log/messages", I could see it on the panel itself.

You will need to right click on the panel and choose to add an item.

That's right but there is no such applet which will enable me to do the things I mentioned.
