I have a fresh install of 12.1 in VMWare player and have a 192.168 IP address. I originally used DHCP, but then changed it to SYNCDHCP and was able to at least ping the gateway 192.168.254.1.
However, I cannot ping any of the DNS servers the host is using, nor any other external IP. DNS also does not resolve.
In VMWare player, I have configured NAT.
I am using this in a corporate environment, so it is possible and highly likely that the host OS is blocking network traffic without me knowing.
Once I get this sorted out, I'll have to set a proxy, but I believe I can manage that part using setenv.
