how to make an image in FreeBSD version 6.0, fully configured, how to install the pkg that comes out of the desktop?
 
Old versions still used pkg_add(1), pkg(8) was introduced from 9.0 onward. There might be some archives, but 6.0 has been EoL for more than 15 years.

I think there are some archives from old release disks. But that's about it. If there are still some package archives it's going to be the same stuff that appeared on the install disks. Those were created when the release was made and never updated since.

I'm not sure XFCE existed back then. Freshports doesn't have the creation date :( x11-wm/xfce. Maybe I'll poke around in the old CVS trees (yes, this was before git and before subversion even).

Ok. I'm getting old. Heck, I remember installing Gnome 1 on FreeBSD for the first time :) Anyway, XFCE saw the light of day in 1997, FreeBSD 6.0 was released in 2005. If there are some packages from the install disks, there might be a package for it. Or maybe some of the distfiles (so you can build it using the ports tree from that release).

This sentence doesn't make any sense. Please explain in an understandable language what you're trying to achieve.

Your teacher is going to expect you read the documentation, then work it out yourself. If somebody else tells you exactly how to do it you won't score brownie points.

You have a copy of the handbook (from 6.0) and you have access to the man pages on the system. That contains all the information you need to get this working.

Can you help me? With # cd /usr/ports/x11-wm/xfce4
# make install clean
installed xfce4, pkg_add still doesn't work but I can ping the internet, what should I do next? What packages can I install to make my desktop work and how do I install them?
