how do you change a users home directory

I did as DutchDaemon suggested to reset my /etc/passwd file and re-edited it with “sudo chsh joshua”. Now my $HOME is set properly, but X is crashing when I try to log into Mate. It says

Fatal Server Error:
(EE) Failed to activate virtual core keyboard: 2(EE)
