How are people changing the look of the login screen?

I was following this post: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=10432

I was able to change the background image, but I don't understand how to modify anything else.

Every "GDM Theme" I download seems to have a GdmGreeterTheme.desktop file and an .xml file.

I've tried following the directions as best I can, but I simply can't seem figure out how to get the "theme" loaded. Hell, I don't even know which file is the "theme" file. Is it the GdmGreeterTheme.desktop? is it the .xml?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
 
Most of the GDM themes you'll find on the net are for older versions of GDM. Somewhere during 2.20 and 2.22 GDM was completely rewritten from scratch. I guess they didn't bother with customizations anymore :(
