I have a FreeBSD virtual machine in which I can't seem to get the main em0 virtual nic to aquire an ip address. This is a pain inthe but because when ever I install software from the ports tree the installation scripts are able to pull down all of the packages that are required by what ever port I'm building.. This being said Is there a way to get the aforementioned em0 interface to acquire an IP address via dhcp?

You don't mention your virtualisation platform, and it would help to know that.

There are a number of potential causes for a DHCP request to fail.

Does your VM NIC work if you assign an IP address manually? Can you ping the DHCP server? Everything else on your network? 8.8.8.8?

Assuming that the NIC is shared, tell us how you have configured:
  • the physical NIC on the virtualisation server; and
  • the virtual NIC on the VM.
(or the details of the passthrough, if you have a NIC dedicated to the VM).
