graphics/drm-61-kmod – currently corresponding to Linux 6.1 DRM

Can the 6.1-branch already be used somehow?

… for FreeBSD 15.0 and above.

I have a guess re: when 6.1 might appear in the ports tree.

Appearance this month is much sooner than I guessed. kudos to developers. Context <https://github.com/freebsd/drm-kmod/>, if needed for your article.

Re: <https://wiki.freebsd.org/PkgBase> since the FreeBSD Project began packaging the base operating system, it's no longer necessary to build from source when updating FreeBSD-CURRENT (or STABLE).

The off-topic sub-forum, for this, partly because CURRENT (currently FreeBSD 15.0-CURRENT) is not supported by the FreeBSD Security Officer (team).

I'm hoping the required LinuxKPI changes will get MFC'ed to stable/14. And before anyone asks, no they won't get added to 14.0-RELEASE. But if it gets MFC'ed it'll be included in 14.1-RELEASE.

Well, a couple days later I've failed to make progress in testing since it's not supported for 14-RELEASE. Since my main platform for FreeBSD is the laptop, I figured no problem; I'll just run 15-CURRENT on the desktop, but unfortunately the install keeps failing in all kinds of exciting ways. And although I change nothing, it's a different fail every time :D

So my real question is if it's possible that we'll see these drivers on 14, or is the kernel incompatibility a showstopping for the lifetime of 14.x? Might be an ignorant question, but outside of using them, kernel and driver stuff is beyond my IT prowess.

The required kernel changes cannot be made to 14.0-RELEASE. They may be able to be added to stable/14 (MFC'ed), if that's the case the changes would become available in 14.1.
