I was an early adopter of the onboard graphics amdgpu, not because I want to be an early adopter, but I was needing new hardware and it was either leap into the new era, or get something already discontinued. So I also had to use FreeBSD 13.0 from the start, and it's been an adventure. I don't mean to criticize people who have worked to make this hardware function, since I know there's a lot involved, but it hasn't been fun for me. I've had more crashes with this system than in my previous 30 years of FreeBSD desktops.
Anyway, I didn't buy a GPU at the time, since I didn't want to break the bank, and figured functionality would only improve. I've still been frustrated though, so can I solve my problems by buying a GPU? This is a tower system.
Two basic questions:
1) Will this actually solve my problem? I can just boot the standard system (13.5 or 14.3), and X will work (after I install it) immediately, without kernel mods or other fiddling? That had been my experience for a while.
2) Will my graphics actually improve? I am not graphics intensive at all, basically only using a web browser in that area, but these days, many sites have videos, including increasing high-def. I sometimes get artifacts with my system. I don't need to do anything more powerful, but will the artifacts go away?
And what sort of graphics card should I buy? What is the minimum that would accomplish these two goals?
