Grafx performance? OpenGL?

To those whom i've not yet spoke to, greetings.

I've recently come over to BSD from Slackware linux. I enjoy playing games via console emulators, and whereas all was well and good, performance of my graphics card since installing BSD is awful. Using the same versions of the same emulators I used previously, it breaks down to using SDL or OpenGL. I preferred OpenGL because it allowed for full screen. The system obviously detects my card (i'm in X as we speak), but anything that requires some horsepower is dead in the water.

I'm confused as to why I don't have the lspci command or i'd post it. This Acer laptop is using an Intel integrated video card. Anything I might look into or try to get my playtime back to life?

lspci is a linux command. You want pciconf. And just because X is running doesn't mean you are getting 3D acceleration (or even 2D acceleration). Post the output of 'glxinfo' and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to a post here.

Sorry, it wouldn't let me upload the attachment, it didn't like the file extension. I renamed it to .txt but then it told me that was too big, so I just slapped it on my server.
http://www.queuevonqu.com/xorg.log

Also, it tells me I don't have a glxinfo command. (?)
Bet that's not good :\

I'm a BSD newbie, i'll learn the differences slowly. pciconf, gotcha :)
--Q

glxinfo is part of the graphics/mesa port. You're Xorg.0.log file looks OK, as far as I can tell (I haven't used an intel GPU on FreeBSD in a while, but Direct rendering appears to get enabled).

Please install the mesa port and then run glxinfo with LIBGL_DEBUG enabled. If you are using bash as your shell, you would run:

$ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

If you are using csh/tcsh, you would run:

$ setenv LIBGL_DEBUG verbose; glxinfo

How? My ports collection is up to date via portsnap, and under "graphics", the only mesa related things is "mesa-demos" and "mesgagl", which I went ahead and did the make && make install for, and there is still no glxinfo command available.

Have I done something wrong?

I can't edit my post.
I looked at freshports and was certain mesagl was the correct port to build. It didn't give me the glx commands, so I went on ahead and installed the mesa-demos port thinking "if it is really mesa demos, it would have to have mesa libs as a dependency". That ended up being the case.

This is off-topic, but you can use [cmd=""]chsh -s /usr/local/bin/bash[/cmd] to make bash your default shell if that's what you're used to from Linux. I assume Bash is installed from Ports and is actually located at /usr/local/bin/bash.

Sorry, I meant to say graphics/mesa-demos. My bad.

Are you actually running X as root, or did you only run glxinfo as root? If you are logged into X as another user, but switched to root to run glxinfo, please run glxinfo as your normal user.

'chsh -s bash' is enough as the port adds /usr/local/bin/bash in /etc/shells.

I've been thinking about making my default. I wanted to have some bizarre purist thing going and use what shell it came with out of the box (bourne shell), but it doesn't have tab completion to perhaps bash it will be. Thanks for the command by the by :)

No, I don't log in as root. Usually, i'll fire up a wterm and go su if i'm going to do root things, like install packages or ports. I did install that port and remained as root when I ran that command. I can repost that as a normal user.
