gnome/mate reshuffles the task bar

I have a recurring issue with the mate desktop. Every now and again the order of the items in the taskbar rearrange themselves. I had noticed this behaviour in the past but just assumed that I had inadvertently triggered something. However, this morning this has happened twice and each time there was a noticeable flicker of the desktop display immediately preceeding the jumbling of the tasks.

Has anyone beside me encountered this?

Is there a reason it happens?

Is there a way of preventing this from happening?

I haven’t used Mate’ in a while but you can right click and “lock” either each item or the whole bar (can’t remember which) Are the items locked? Not sure that will help but can’t hurt to try.
