Can you actually get Gnome to add/remove packages through a gui?
What about UPDATING through Gnome like linux does by popping up and icon to let you know there is updates?
 
ports-mgmt/gnome-packagekit

There's the ports-mgmt/gnome-packagekit ports, I never tried it but it seems to be as an graphical interface for the ports management and it's use portupgrade base.
