Change in sign-up data / GDPR

For a long time, we have requested Date of Birth and Location when creating a new account. We did this exclusively as an additional anti-spam measure: the more you frustrate an automatic spam account creating process (as used by many spam organizations) by requesting 'unexpected mandatory data'...

IMHO it all seems most sensible.
But when I try to change (obfuscate) my date of birth, I'm greeted by this message.

"Once your birthday has been entered, it cannot be changed. Please contact an administrator if it is incorrect."

Is this process working entirely as intended ?
 
Yeah, once you entered a date you can't remove it anymore, forum software won't allow it. Do you want us to remove it for you? We can remove it if you want.
 
Yes, I'd be delighted to have my birthdate removed.
Or if this is a mandatory field, perhaps 01/01/1900 might be sufficient.

As admin I can actually empty that field. It's a little odd you can't do this in your own user profile, if you try to change it yourself the field must contain something.
