FreeBSD After Installation

Hello. I want to install FreeBSD soon. However, I have no BSD experience. What should I do after installing FreeBSD?

Read The Bible thoroughly. It should tell you many things.

You do realise that just installing FreeBSD does not give you a GUI, I hope.

So the first thing to do is decide if you need one.

Learn pkg installation. See what pkgs other people find important.

Learn how to ask questions.

If you have problems describe your computer environment and what the nature of the problem is.

The people here are generally helpful, so don't be afraid of seeking help.

Had a basic computer course years ago that had the advisory: "If you haven't blown up an operating system lately, you're not trying hard enough."

Welcome!

I want to install FreeBSD soon. However, I have no BSD experience.

What should I do after installing FreeBSD?

Be aware that the FreeBSD Handbook is not a bible. There are significant omissions.

Most relevant, at the time of writing:

fetch, and install, patches - before an upgrade.png

fetch and install (circled) are commands that you can run with the freebsd-update tool.

There's a manual page (sometimes abbreviated, manpage), which is a good point of reference when you already know something, but not ideal for a newcomer. freebsd-update(8).

Within the FreeBSD Handbook: <https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/book/#freebsdupdate-security-patches>.

Relax and enjoy the experience. ;)

I would say parts of the handbook should be read before installing :)

Thank you all very much. I think I will install FreeBSD tomorrow, everything you have said will help me. Wish me luck. :)
