FreeBSD 2.2.6 Networking

Hi. I installed FreeBSD 2.2.6 but it does not apparently support DHCP.

I am trying to get it working under Virtualbox 7 as a guest.
Also the mouse acts nuts producing many error messages.
I am trying to set it up as a PS/2 mouse.

The host is Ubuntu 22.04 running Virtualbox 7.

Any help would be appreciated. Ken

dhcilent was added to 3.1-STABLE on february 18th 1999: https://github.com/dspinellis/unix-history-repo/commit/530933ad88840c848bef2b09f771ed1aa800ae5b

Ah, nostalgia ... I installed 2.2.6 in July 1998 as our little network club's server.

A very excellent release to choose, 25 years ago.

Methinks thou yankest our chain ... and we'll never see you again.

No yankest. I really did install FreeBSD 2.2.6 in a VM under Virtualbox and am trying
to get ethernet support working.

I sure seems to be complete OS. Without DHCP I wonder how to configure ethernet support.

So are you suggesting I trash the version I have?

Support for 2.2.6 ended about 25 years ago. What are you expecting?

Leaving the obvious "why?" and off-topic caveats to others, assuming genuine historical interest ...

By doing what dhclient does, using ifconfig(8) to assign a suitable subnet and static IPv4 address within the router's network, route(8) to add the default route, and manual configuration of domain, DNS servers etc
(edit: with rc.conf variables).

Consider changing the network's Adapter Type to somethig else that's supporrted. I remember having issues with the default adapter and DHCP with VirtualBox a long time ago.

How is this going to make an executable appear that was never included in that version of FreeBSD? A DHCP client was added some time during the development of FreeBSD 3.1, it didn't exist before that time. At least not in the base OS, you could install a DHCP client from ports if I recall correctly. Finding a ports tree from that era shouldn't be too difficult, but finding the correct distfiles to actually get it to build will be a challenge.

I just noticed this, and it's REALLY funny because I have these discs from Walnut Creek and I had the exact same problem at the time and it drove me nuts that I couldn't figure out how to get the competing (console and X mouse options) to either work or co-exist at the time.
