Solved FreeBSD-14.1 boot iso checksum error

It's not the checksum of the ISO file that's in question here, all installation files (like base.txz) are downloaded from the internet with the bootonly images.

did it got corrupted during download or was it something else ?

1726625956515.pngDid you select a mirror? Latvia does not work for me:

There's a 2019 bug, Many FreeBSD mirrors are outdated or broken.

In this situation, restarting the installer fails:

> Error
>
> No disk(s) present to configure

Exiting then starting the installer was not a workaround, so I reset the virtual machine.

If not already reported, someone might like to report this bug.

1726626454518.pngWithout specifying a mirror, the checksum mismatch:

I messaged Colin Percival (author of the 6th September email):

Checksum mismatch for FreeBSD-14.1-STABLE-amd64-20240905-4938f554469b-268665-bootonly.iso

<link to email>, <https://forums.freebsd.org/post/672275>.

Should the person who discovered the mismatch – GlitchyDot (from Klaipeda, Lithuania) – report a bug, or would you treat it as negligible?

(Might one mismatch be a canary in a coal mine?)

My own find of the mismatch was probably Equinix (Frankfurt, Germany).

I didnt select any mirrors . I just downloaded boot only iso from here: https://download.freebsd.org/snapshots/amd64/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/14.1/
and during install i always use geodns option when it comes to mirror selection.

yes, it was boot only iso and it failed during install of FreeBSD. I did not downloaded and checked iso as i used proxmox "download from url" option.

Thanks to Colin for confirming that there's nothing wrong in this case, and for explaining that 5th September (20240905) bits are no longer on the download mirror(s).

1726711584558.pngClarifications:
  • snapshots of STABLE are not monthly, as stated in the FreeBSD Handbook
  • regardless of the number of weeks covered by ISO images, there will be one relevant base.txz (no more).
