Solved failure to upgrade to 13.1-RELEASE

I am faced with

loading required module 'kernel'
module 'kernel' exists but with wrong version

after going from 12.1-RELEASE to 13.1-RELEASE
I tried following another thread but I don't have option 8 at boot.

I restored the old kernel and back to the machine. Still got to upgrade to 13.1_RELEASE tho.

The safest way to do a major upgrade is to use Boot environments.
