If they can only get sound support it would be great. I've tried Debian hurd in the past on several hardware devices and was unsuccessful in attempts to boot.

It's actually a better idea to use a working system like BSD or a mature kernel like Linux and remove the bits you don't want. At least that way you can boot the system. ?

Devuan is a good system. I have a laptop with devuan installed. I've got to overwrite that with some bsd. ?

You can build one yourself (see WITHOUT_SOURCELESS in src.conf(5)), call it FreeBSD-libre, and start rewriting all those drivers from scratch
