Display turns very pale, cannot read the text

I was attempting to install 14.3 onto a Dell 9300 laptop. Inserted the USB and hit the "ON" button. The boot splash came up and then the display started to get too bright to read any of the text. I tried to dim the display using the controls, but that just made it slightly darker with the text not improving.
Did I find a bug?

Does the display work properly with any other OS? A "white-out" or washed out picture might be caused by a hardware issue (LCD panel connector).

Thank you, you're probably correct. I was wondering if maybe one of the lamps inside might be failing. The display is sort of working with 3 other OSes but I was looking forward to using BSD. I think I'll try to find this old laptop a new owner.

Well yes it does. Antix and Peppermint look pretty good, jut FreeBSD has the problem. It starts up very visible and as soon as autoboot kicks in it starts going dim to the point that I can't make out the text.
I found a new display, $90. I don't want to spend that much, it's needs a museum
