Solved Desktop/Window Manager Load time

So, I realize this is subjective so don't hammer me too hard. I had a bit of a hiatus where I used Void Linux for a couple of months. Same window manager configuration x11-wm/fluxbox where I am loading only xmodmap, xresources and graphics/feh, then running exec startfluxbox.

Under Void, the desktop snapped up instantly. Under FreeBSD 12.0, it takes a few seconds to load, maybe 5 seconds. Same with x11-wm/cwm. Not a big deal really but it is certainly noticeable. So my question is, are their tunables that can speed this up or is this just the way it is. Like I said, not a deal breaker but I am just curious.

Same hardware: MSI Z240-A Pro, i7-7700, 64GB DDR4 memory, using on chip HD630 video and graphics/drm-kmod on 12.0-RELEASE.

Just thought of this: maybe CPU security settings because of the Intel chip vulnerabilities?

EDIT: just thought of something: I was logging in from LXDE on Void and am just running startx on FreeBSD so X was already loaded on Linux. That probably accounts for the difference. I'll close this, that's more than likely the issue. Glad I talked this out with myself ?.

To be fair, FreeBSD doesn't feel all that snappy to me. I use fvwm and xfce and xfce is pretty sluggish. Maybe it has to do with picom (formerly compton).

I agree. For straight window managers it's fine but any of the DEs I have tried, it feels sluggish. It's ok really. I like the minimalist environment FreeBSD provides. Sometimes there are issues getting things to work but for the most part I am happy.

I haven't any speed complaints at all with FreeBSD. I've always used fvwm even on Linux before I started using FreeBSD. I like fvwm because it's light and fast. It's also highly configurable.

Haven't tried any desktop environments, don't know what that would offer over what I'm using. DEs just seem to me like a bunch of bundled stuff I can add myself if I want it.

Hello, Have you tried the default configuration for the 2.6.9 fvwm? is very good and modern (compared to the before default config's)

For me, I see no difference in openbox on CentOS-7x and FreeBSD-12.1. Different machines, the FreeBSD one is somewhat more powerful. And in the environment, I don't see any sluggishness. As the OP wrote though, a lot of this is highly subjective.

I have but I don't care for fvwm. It's a personal preference thing. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Just curious what you don't like about it. It's highly flexible and you can pretty much sculpt your desktop to look however you want. Though I have to admit the text based configuration it uses is a bit involved, does take some time to work things out, but the documentation is good.

Agree on the flexibility but the config is daunting and I don't want to spend a lot of time changing everything to the way I want. Fluxbox and cwm are almost ready to go out of the box. Just my preference.

Yeah I get it, I agree the configuration is a bit involved. Takes a bit of work to get it set up, and the default isn't much of a start.

Don't get me wrong, I think some of the custom fvwm desktops look great. I am just lazy and the less I have to configure the better ?
