Current (any month, year?) evidence-supported strengths of FreeBSD over a major Linux like Debian?

I do not think it will go away in any foreseeable future.
As long as people, although now in single digit numbers, are working on Xorg, and Wayland developers are continuing to maintain XWayland, Xorg should continue to live on.

In a way it is good that the crazies that do changes for no reason (other than employee reviews) are now working on Wayland and don't screw up Xorg any more than it already is.

Why do you think funding is based on, or related to technical merit?
Well it isn't necessarily of course, but well ...

Maybe one could just think of FreeBSD as a thing like "high-end audio equipment". Higher subjective quality, but not for everyone.

It'd be reasonable for funding to correlate with "what is most useful", but maybe there are different ideas of usefulness or a marketing problem.

I was setting up a Linux system for my cousin last year and took the opportunity to benchmark a few game titles and synthetic tests in a Wayland vs Wayland performance on Linux vs FreeBSD. FreeBSD outperformed Linux at time in my tests. I was using an RX 5700 XT for the tests.

When extracting mmaps from WoW for TrinityCore on i5-8400H, it took 29 mins on FreeBSD, 35 mins Fedora Linux, and 40 mins Windows 10/11.

WoW the game itself performed good all OSs and reached 60+ FPS vsync (on FreeBSD Wine + WoW OpenGL).

Since I still have problems to solve before setting up Wine in FreeBSD, and it seems that you got it running I have a few questions.

1) Do you use a Nvidia or AMD GPU ?
2) How are current-gen games like Final Fantasy 7, Kingdom Hearts 3, or Nier Replicant/Automata performing on FreeBSD ?
3) How is the performance of VKD3D for DX12 games?
4) Should I use Wine or Wine-Proton ?

1. Intel :p (UHD 630)
2. I believe current games can work comparably on FreeBSD if your GPU has Vulkan and the game can use DXVK (Dota 2)
3. It's been a while but on Linux I used VKD3D-Proton instead of Wine's (iirc it was a d3d12.dll replace); it worked good with Diablo 2 Resurrected Intel UHD (video), also RX 6600 XT and with DLSS with RTX 3060
4. I think Wine; iirc the Proton package was older than Wine, but I'm not sure if Proton has an advantage for anything on FreeBSD (I've used Staging and regular Wine for years)
