configure local_unbound to resolv local lan hosts

Greetings, I'd like to use local_unbound on a couple of freebsd machines to resolve IP's for my local lan. I have it running on a machine and modified unbound.conf to listen for ipv4 and ipv6 queries on my local subnet, that's working. I'd like local unbound to resolv my own private subnet domain but go upstream for all internet queries. I'm not exactly sure how to do this with local_unbound. I've seen examples for split dns using the normal unbound but I'm not sure how different local_unbound is. I'm a newbie to this and hoping someone could give me some pointers on how to use local_unbound in this way.

regards
John
