Xfce change to new user

I am probably in the wrong discussion group but here is my question. I installed xfce and slim and it works great as root but I don't want to stay there as I know it is not safe but logout as another user is greyed out and slim won't accept the (non)root user I entered at install and when I adduser it won't accept that either. I am a returning noob to freebsd and hope some kindness will be shown in replies. Thanks
 
Slim depends on the user having a proper ~/.xinitrc file. Assuming X itself works (apparently it does as 'root'?).

Did you add the user to the video group? Some graphics drivers need this to work correctly. Speaking of, what graphics driver are you using?
