Solved Change a User Password as Root

I misplaced and don't remember the passwords I assigned to two 'user' accounts.
I thought, 'no problem' super-user can assign them new passwords.

Not so simple, at least I haven't figured it out.

# chpass ... requires me to enter the 'encrypted' form of the password i want to assign.

I've read the man page for 'pw' and the old user password change utility 'passwd' but
can't understand what to do.
I don't want to delete and then re-add the users.
