Solved Can't start mate-base on 11.1REL

Hi,

I installed 11.1REL and built mate-base (1.18) and gnome-keyring-daemon from ports. I have moused, hald, and dbus enabled, and everything seems updated and they seem to be running. No blockages on firewall. proc is mounted.

When I start it using mate-session, I see, after a few seconds (whittled down a bit here)-

Unable to init server: could not connect to 127.0.0.1
gdk_display_get_name assertion 'GDK_IS_DISPLAY' failed
g_setenv: assertion 'value != NULL' failed
gnome-keyring-daemon: couldn't set environmental variable in session... Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying
Segmentation fault

Anyone have this before and/or know how to fix?

I have never used MATE but I found a forum thread that discusses it:

Also, did you create a ~/.xinitrc file?
It seems it would be easier to launch xorg (you installed that too)
from a command-line startx

Thanks - turned out xorg was not installed!!
