QEMU works (at least a few years ago when I tried to migrate my VMs from Linux to FreeBSD), but you need a lot of patience to start a modern operating system - QEMU is Linux only since years when it comes to more than academical usecases.
Virtualbox looks like boots but there is just black screen.
…have you read the handbook? Works fine for many other (but for me it's just a waste of time as with bhyve there exists an IMO much more better alternative without the need to dance with Oracle).

qemu alone works just fine. However kvm is not supported under FreeBSD so you will suffer performance hit on this platform. I don't use virt manager but if I recall correctly "connection" in their context means they are able to detect and work with kvm.
